Face wash, handwash, hair masks, hair gels, hairspray, dry shampoo, foot scrubs, eye creams, lip creams, body moisturiser, face moisturiser, deodorants, concealer, foundation, mascara, eye shadow, eyebrow liner, eyeliner, blush, nail polish – the list of products we slap, slather and rub onto our skin is neverending, and I used to buy every single one without any thought to the wasteful packaging or the ingredients within. Then there are the products that are not simply comestic, such as body washes, toothpastes and shampoos, and those that we use for, ahem, our own waste products, including plastic-wrapped toilet paper, sanitary pads and tampons. While I believe that medicine is one area where we need to use commercially manufactured products, it is also worth considering some low-waste treatments for simple ailments, like the common cold.
There is no hardline rule to say someone who cares for the environment must do without make-up or never indulge in a face mask. I’m not anti make-up; in fact, I love it. I love my bare face as much as I love it with mascara and rouge. Human beings have been wearing make-up for thousands of years for a variety of reasons and should be free to do so for many more. But what shouldn’t be allowed is a poorly regulated industry that uses harmful chemicals packaged up in wasteful materials that have an environmental impact that will be felt for generations. I don’t believe anyone or anything on this earth should have to suffer so I can have scented toilet paper or ruby-red lipstick in cute packaging. Is my vanity worth more than another human life, the environment or everything else I share this planet with? No, it’s not. Being kind is beauty in itself.
Fact
In 2008, the cosmetics industry created over 120 billion units of packaging. Not million – billion. Of these 120 billion units, 48 billion pieces were plastic.
